So I'm meeting with Sgt. Joe Heller of the Daytona Beach Police Dept today to work out the police escort for our 6th Annual V8 Motorcycle Run and Show and he proceeds to inform me of the following:

Atlantic Avenue (A1A) headed South from Silver Beach Road. A Boss Hoss and a Buell are side by side at a light. The light turns green and they both SCREAM away from the light like serious money is on the line. Sgt. Heller is watching the entire thing!

They get about 100 yards and he lights both of them up. Sgt. Heller told me it was very nice of them both to pull over since he would have NEVER caught them otherwise.

Sgt. Heller is a tall and somewhat intimidating officer, no doubt making Monte and his challenger more than a bit nervous. As he walked up to read these two hooligans the riot act, he told me he was wondering just what kind of excuses he would hear this time.

Sgt. Heller told me what he found was a mild-mannered guy riding a V8 motorcycle, who didn't stand out in any way, or try to use any excuses. He doesn't remember the Buell guy at all.

Well, with ticket book in hand and prepared to give it quite a workout, Sgt Heller suddenly realized that he had written the last ticket in his ticket book earlier... it was empty! He told Monte and Buell Boy "this is your lucky day" as they were about to get away with this drag race scott-free. AMAZING - especially for Daytona!!!

As Sgt. Heller describes it, Monte then invited him to his hotel later so he could ride that awesome V8 motorcycle. Monte told him the name of the hotel and said that he was on the 8th floor. Sgt. Heller found it kind of strange that he didn't give a room number, but he just figured that Monte didn't remember the number.

Well, when Sgt. Heller got to the hotel and asked for Monte Warn's room number on the 8th floor the front desk guy said, "Monte has the entire 8th floor."

What???

The front desk guy proceeds to tell Sgt. Heller that Monte Warne owns this company called Boss Hoss V8 Motorcycles and that his company has the entire 8th floor! Sgt. Heller had NO IDEA who he was dealing with until that very moment. He thought this Monte Warne guy was just a motorcyclist who rides a V8-powered bike.

Why? Because when Monte was faced with a wreckless driving ticket, or worse on the side of the road, he still didn't throw around who he was, who he knows or any other stories. He was simply ready to take the heat. Sgt Heller was also impressed that Monte wasn't dressed extravagently like some sucessful business owners sometimes do ("especially in Florida").

I got chills tonight as I could see just how impressed Sgt. Heller still is about the way Monte handled himself on the side of the road. "Everyone tries to talk their way out of tickets and most of their stories of the business they own or the people they know are bogus", said Sgt Heller. "Monte was the real deal and he didn't even try to use that to his own advantage."

Sgt Heller rode Monte's V8 bike that day and he loved it! It was quite obvious to me today that Sgt Joe Heller will never forget his encounter with Monte Warne nor his ride on a Boss Hoss.

By the way, this story didn't take place this week at Bike Week. It took place in the mid-90's and Sgt Heller told it to me tonight with a clarity and enthusiasm that proved to me the impact that Monte made on him.

Oh yea... one more small detail. Monte was winning that race against Buell Boy!!! :)

Monte Warne - You Are The Man and you have my respect and the respect of Sgt. Joe Heller of the Daytona Beach Police Department!!!

Monte is exactly like that. I've had the opportunity to speak with him on a couple of occations and he is always the same. Before I got my bike, Curtis Pyatt from Texas Boss Hoss introduced me to him at the Dallas Bike show. I had a million things that I would have liked to talk to him about, but I made one mistake. I let Curtis tell him that I flew CH-47 Chinooks for the US Army. After that it was all about helicopters and flying. We still have the T-Shirts that he gave the BFly and I. I still wonder why he gave HER the one that said "The Boss"?!?:gaah:

Monte would fit right in, up here in Canada. The R.C.M.P. are pretty decent about anyone who doesn't try to sugar coat or impress them. They are hard working people with families, and likely do the odd thing like that when they are off duty like we all do sometimes.

That's awesome to hear that Sgt. Heller took Monte up on his offer to visit and ride his bike. It seems as though Monty and Joe are cut from the same cloth. Cool dignity...

So, Monte... what's your thoughts on living in an Igloo?
