We're very pleased to have Fred partnering with us here on MBF and wanted to welcome him to the site. Fred brings many years of motorcycling and journalism experience with him and we're excited to have him.
Here's a little background.
Fred Rau is a professional motorcycle journalist with over 30 years experience in the industry, publishing his first motorcycling magazine article in Rider magazine in 1976. In the 1980s he was the Editor of Wing World magazine for the Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA), leaving there in 1989 to become the Managing Editor, and later Editor in Chief of Road Rider magazine. In 1991, Fred and his mentor, Bob Carpenter, launched Motorcycle Consumer News (MCN), where he served as Senior Editor for the next 14 years. In 2004, Fred went back to freelancing, and currently publishes three or four articles a month in a dozen different motorcycling publications around the world. To date, he figures he has published more than 800 motorcycling-related articles in magazines and newspapers all over the world.
Over the years, Fred has tested and reported on approximately 250 new motorcycle models for the major manufacturers, in addition to evaluating hundreds of motorcycling-related products such as helmets, boots, gloves, jackets, tires, etc. His investigative articles on defective products have resulted in several major class-action lawsuits that have returned millions of dollars to motorcyclists. His landmark series on motorcycling oils has been reprinted in six languages, and is currently used as a teaching text in several engineering colleges. As a result of these and other articles, Fred has received the American Motorcyclist Association MVP Award as a “Most Valued Person in Motorcycling,” and the Writer’s Guild Award for Best Editorial Writing.
Fred was also the Editor of the MRF Report for the Motorcycle Riders Foundation, a publication devoted to legislative and legal issues both domestic and worldwide that affect motorcycling, was one of the original Task Force Leaders for the Ride For Kids, and the co-founder of the National Ride To Work Day.
In his spare time, Fred travels the country as a Featured Speaker at major motorcycling events, and a seminar presenter at smaller venues. He has served as the Master of Ceremonies and Featured Speaker at the world’s largest touring rally, Americade in Lake George, NY, for the past 21 years in a row, as well as speaking at the BMWMOA International Rally, the MSTA National Rally, the BMWRA National Rally and many more.
Currently, Fred owns and runs his own online motorcycle touring magazine, “Fred Rau Motorcycling,” and his own motorcycle touring company, “Fred Rau Adventure Tours,” both of which can be found through his homepage, www.fredrau.com. He also has a new book coming out this fall through Motorbooks International, “The Motorcycle Touring Bible,” and is currently traveling the country on a new Can-Am Spyder RTS, as an Ambassador for the OEM, Bombardier Recreational Products.
To date, Fred has documented just over 1.4 million miles of two-wheeled travel.
