Did anyone read the July 2010 Popular Mechanics bike review? What did you think?

Doesn't look like a lot of folks here have read that article.

Usually if I want to read about shootouts between different bikes I just check www.motorcycle.com

What did they say on Popular Mechanics - anyway??

    cheers,

It was between the Raider, Vic Jackpot, Harley rocker, & Honda fury. They said the Vic was the fastest & liked the looks the best. The raider had the better ride, & refined handling. Honda was a good entry level bike for the price. The Rocker had good fit & finish more or less.

Hey mon ... check dat link I be givin' you

You'll find an old shootout that includes the Raider, Victory, a Harley and something else. The riders there came to a different conclusion. Search the old links - they did it a couple of years ago.

Does it have the 100" or the 106"? Is it modified or stock? Just curious.

Here is the link. Read the article. There is a picture of the bike being reviewed & a link at the bottom of each page. Per popular mechanics, the Vic with the 106 engine tested faster. It tested faster because they ran the bikes on a track, & not on a dyno drag.

If you compare the stats of the Raider to the Jackpot, you'll find that they're very close. The Raider weighs 67 Lbs. more than the Jackpot. However, the Raider is rated at 5 HP more than the Jackpot. The Jackpot was only 5/100 of a second quicker, and only .81 of a mile an hour faster through the 1/4 mile. In this case, I think it came down to the rear tire contact patch. If the Raider had been running a 240 rear tire, on an 8 1/2" wide rim, the outcome might have been different. Yes, I realize they were running a stock Raider against a stock Jackpot. All things being equal, engine torque is what wins drag races. Without a wider rear tire, the Raider's torque advantage over the Jackpot goes up in smoke and rear wheel spin.

Paladin, I got to thinking it takes more HP to spin a heavier wheel & tire assembly. I think your making excuses.

Red light to Red Light, I smoked a jackpot 3 times in a row by at least 1 bike length.

OK, I'll try to explain it another way. Because the jackpot has a wider rear tire (larger footprint), it can efficientely transfer more of it's torque to the ground. In other words, the Jackpot can launch harder and hook up faster than the Raider, because the Jackpot's wider rear tire is better matched to it's torque output. The Raider develops more torque than the jackpot. However, due to the Raider's narrower tire (smaller footprint), it can't efficiently transfer it's torque advantage to the ground. To keep from spinning the rear tire, the Raider can't launch as hard, or hook up as fast as the Jackpot. If you're still confused, look at some drag bikes, they have wide rear tires for a reason!

Rakster, not the same bike in the article. Did you read the review? Most likely 100" you raced. 2010's have a 106".

Paladin, an extra .5" of tire contact area is not going to make that much difference. If you run a wider tire & rim on a raider(more mass) it just uses up all that extra raider torque to get that heavier wheel & tire spinning. I understand what your saying. It's pretty much a wash.

When you look at the numbers posted in the article, the Raider and the Jackpot are pretty enenly matched, even with the Raider having a narrower rear tire. That's why I think the Raider would have edged out the Jackpot, if the Raider was running a wider tire, on a wider rim. I realize it's speculation on my part. However, having raced for many years, I would say it's educated speculation. By the way, an extra 1/2" of tire width is a big deal, when it comes to racing.

I think the biggest difference that your overlooking is that with the money you save on th Raider you can afford to mod it for more horse power and torque.

Paladin, we live in a world of speculation. I liked the article, because they ran the bikes. Not just dyno dragged & speculated.

if you want the victory go buy one and spend $5,000 more. if not then buy whatever you want. seems like you have a hard on for the victory and the fact that it came in at .15 sec faster than the raider. put a novice rider on the victory and it will run a 14 sec quarter mile. your arguing just to argue and that is awfully annoying.

The last Friday of every month in the summer we have a car show on Public Square in Wilkes-Barre, PA. The guys (Jackpot) and myself were at the show. His is a new 106ci gold color. even had some mods not sure of what. he was talking smack along with the Harley guys. So I said put up or shut up. The Harley guys wouldn't even touch that, but the Jackpot said Ok on the way home. So We went for three red lights until he turned off the main drag. I smoked him every time. I have Swept Exhaust and 240 Elite. He had V&H and I don't know about anything else he may have had. I'm not a pro, but neither was he, so my point is: In the real world I would take the Raider. I still have money in my pocket at the end of the night to boot. BTW as far as the wider tire, MC tires are rounded so how much dif does it make. Racing slicks that you refere to are totally flat for drag bikes.

The latest 106 vics are factory modded (stage 2 cams). The difference in torque and speed vs Raider and Vic is pretty much non existent, comes down to the weight of the driver and handling. I was choosing between a Jackpot and a Raider but went with the Raider. The reason I liked the Jackpot is that it has a 6 speed tranny and a larger tank, the Raider has a much more tempting price and I like the looks more (the vic has just too much plastic imo). I live in Mexico and am a member of a MC group here (mostly Harleys). We usually ride around 85 mph (there is virtually no speed limit here) so I always keep searching for the 6th gear...The Harleys cruise along nicely at that speed, however I smoke them easily with a little twist on the throttle. But the problem is that they can do around 200 miles on one tank (not counting the Sportsters) so that kind of sux (I get around 130 miles on one tank).

Haven't used my caps lock once in this thread. Just having a stimulating conversation about the virtues of different bikes. Yes, you caught me. I own a Vic. I bought it for $7,000.00, & have it so heavily modified most people have to ask what it is. Also off the subject, "Raider58"(raider rider with the unique air intake) does get 50+ mpg on his raider. Real impressive how you guys are willing to eat your own brother alive for being different.

problem is, is that all you did was try and talk up how big and bad the victories are. im sure its as no surprise that the majority of people around here arent victory fans. if you like the victories then good for you. i looked at them too. just not my thing. my two biggest complaints are the price tag and the way the engine looks. i have a pretty heavily modded raider too, not into the chest pounding thing tho.

That popular mechanic article was worth reading just for the laughs of reading about:

This thing is brutally quick and blasted through the quarter-mile in only 12.34 seconds.

    And:

    QUARTER-MILE · 13.55 @ 95.13 mph

    Also:

smoking the quarter-mile in only 12.19 seconds.

    As well as:

    QUARTER-MILE · 13.79 @ 93.29 mph

Please, FAST and these bikes don't belong in the same sentence. Oh yeah, my skinny tires will have no trouble keeping up with that.
