Default Help with Backrest, backrest pad and luggage rack - Yamaha or Aftermarket - Ideas?

    Hi all,

    New to this forum...

I have a 2010 Raider. I would like some advice for options for a short-medium height backrest / luggage rack combo like Yamaha offers...or aftermarket possibilities. The backrest/pad should be comfortable for a passenger without being too high. I would prefer permanent mount instead of detachable. I have T-Bag aftermarket luggage that works great with a medium height backrest and luggage rack on my FatBoy. Looking to use the same T-Bag for the Raider.

Also, another concern I have is that the mounting hardward doesn't scratch the Raider's chrome fender struts during installation/use/removal. For my FatBoy, I used some masking tape on the backside of the back-rest mounting hardware before bolting it to the fender struts.

Also, I may be changing the seat on my Raider to the Danny Gray Big Seat with wide pillon for passenger.

Anyone have some pics of their back rest / luggage rack combo...yamaha, cobra or other aftermarket? Need to decide soon. I've got a trip coming up...

    Thanks all...
    Regards

I bought the Cobra mini sissy bar and the formed rack. I am very happy with it and it was far cheaper than Yamaha.

I've got all the Yamaha gear and can tell you what you need to know about that stuff.
I have the Yamaha dual seat, a backrest for the passenger, and I just installed that backrest
for the rider as well. I also have the carrier.
There's no problems with the height of the backrests - they are comfortable and well made.
Also ... no problem at all with the quick release beackrest. I rarely take it off the bike, but it
has been useful a coupla' times to get the hardware off ... so I could clean some areas and
mount an extra piece of hardware (saddlebag supports).

    cheers,

    T84a and DistantThunder,

Thanks for your replies. Going to dealer to check out Yamaha accessories tonite.

T84a....Can you tell me how high above the stock passenger seat the Cobra mini sissy bar extends and also the dimensions of the sissy bar pad? Also, please provide the dimensions (L x W) of the 'formed' luggage rack. Unfortunately, the Cobra site does not provide these dimensions.

Gotta get something installed for a trip in a couple of weeks. Thanks in advance...

    Ken,

Thanks for the update and pic. The pic helps alot. I like the Cobra mini sissy bar and the formed rack. I think I'll be going this route.

So to confirm... that's 9" from the 'top' of the passenger seat to the 'top' of the sissy bar pad? Any feedback from passengers regarding comfort on long rides?

Lastly, can you recommend a vendor with best pricing??

    Thanks Ken

    Regards
    Al

Thats correct. I've never had a passenger on my Raider, sorry. I bought mine from Phat Performance.

This is the setup we have on the wife's Raider. Raider bags, Cobra med or tall (I forget) backrest and rack. Calvacade driver's backrest for her, I have a different seat I put on but rarely ride it.

Ordered luggage rack from DK and they did not have it listed for the Raider, but Star 1100 or something like that. I had the bike there, we walked it out and it appeared that it would fit. Only 8 pound limit, so not sure how functional. Never haul a passenger but do haul luggage. Big bag on rear seat, and small round bag on luggage rack, with rain suit in it.

I can take some measurements if you want. She is happy with it. Also put different bars on for her.

    Wstar and Ken,

Thanks for the pics and info. This helps alot. I think I'm going with the Cobra BR and formed luggage rack...they look good on the Raider, and there's good clearance between the LR and fender

I'm not worried about the 8 lb limit for the Formed LR.....the Harley LR I have on my FatBoy has the same weight limit and I've ridden trips with a med-large T-bag on it weighing 40-60 lbs with no problem...the LR designs are a little different but it will probably be OK. When I don't have a passenger the large/heavier luggage goes on the backseat, and a medium or small day-bag goes on the LR.

    Thanks guys...

Cobra swept floorboards front and back might be next...

I would not worry about the cobra's 8 lb rating, it is way under rated. I sat on mine and I am 250lbs it was fine. If you are worried get some stronger grade bolts for it. I have one on my RIder and one on my 96 Magna.

I have the Cobra medium square tube backrest with the formed rack. (9" from top of stock seat to top of backrest - wouldn't want to go any shorter if carrying a T-Bag) Both my girls say it makes riding back there more comfy but we haven't done more than an hour at a time. They are 5'7" and 6', average build.

The formed rack is heavy duty. I expected it to be somewhat lightweight. The whole setup is quality. Once the bolts are tight, the siderails don't touch the fender supports. My Kury backrest bag weight 10# by itself and I packed it with gear and rode 1200 miles, no problem.

To tie stuff onto my seat I used 1" lashing straps run between the siderails and fender and back over. very secure.

Tieing stuff to the rack is challenging, like smaller stuff, because the slots are not conducive to bungee hooks staying secure in one spot but a little creative thinking and it works ok.

As far as quick release, I originally wanted a rest/rack with that feature but I'm leaving this one in place because it looks good to me. If I want to remove it, it will only take 5 minutes anyhow.

Oh yeah, the formed rack, probably by accident, matches the contour of the rear fender as viewed from above looking down.
