    Default tires

I am shopping for new tires for my 09 raider. i have read as many posts on the subject as i can find. but i still have questions about switching to a 240 rear. is the full tire size 240/40-18 or does the 40 change also? as for the front tire, i have not seen much info about different brands to replace it. i am very dissatified with the metz do to them dry rotting within a short period of time. any info would b helpful.

suggest that you get the avon cobra 240 for the rear tire.
i have tried the metz 210, pirelli 240 and avon 240.
    avon is definitely the best.

most folks have not switched the metz from the front tire.
not sure what you mean by "dry rotting" - have not heard any complaint
    like that before.

My Avon Cobra is: 240/40 R18.

My front tire, I replaced the stock Metz with another of the same Metz.

I'm running Avon Cobra front & rear. Front is stock size & the rear is 240/40 R18.
Wouldn't run anything else. Plus I'm running Dyna beads in my tires

    +1 with what DJinNH said.
I've got exactly the same tire set-up as him.
    Quite a few guys do.

But I'm not saying there's anything wrong with having an Avon front tire.
I just haven't tried it myself.

what i meant by dry rot is i keep my bike indoors unless im riding, i had 3000 miles on the stock front tire when i noticed deep cracks on both sidewalls all around the tire. i had it replaced by yamaha and the new tire did the same thing. i have seen 2 other raiders at rallys and both had same cracks(not sure of age on these tires.

My front tire on my raider has really bad cracks in it also. Tire has only like 2,000 miles on it and about yr old and always kept in garage.

The Dunlop E3 is the tallest of the 240 tires and I would occasionally rub it on the top of the fender riding single. My bike is slammed. I now have close to 6000 miles on an Avon 240 and it's never hit. The Avon 240 is also the shortest of the bunch too. I'm real happy with it and it's still got plenty of tread life left.

i don't like the sound of those cracks at all.
both of you guys with cracked tires need to ditch that rubber and get new tires.
i have not heard of anything like that with the Metz tires in CA.
maybe this is a temperature related problem - storage during cold winters?
anyway, sounds like you are looking for a different kind of front tire.
that's not acceptable ... at least it wouldn't be to me.
you might want to post this tire cracking problem on the RSR forum as well.

I’m running the Dunlop E3. Yes if you changed to a the sub-fender license plate mount to a Kuryakyn (P/N 925. Even with the shock adjusted to the max. With 2up when you go over a big bump or dip you can fell the bike slow down like putting the brake on. However, when I need a new rear tire again I’m going back to the stock one. Mainly because of the loss of bottom toque, when ridding 2up because of the taller tire. It’s like having a higher gear ratio rear end in a car. Roland

My advice is go for Avon's, I changed both tyres at 5000 miles to Avon's, stock size in the front and 240 in the rear, bike has now done 17500 miles and plenty of tread left, going to Denmark and Sweden today for a week so that'll be another 1000 miles. Will prob change them out before Maggie valley though, good in the wet as well.

Default Metz front tire dry rot

I have the same issue with my front tire. I have a metz 880 120/70/21 and primarily the right side of the tire shows a lot off cracking along the whole side wall of the tire. Have not been loosing any air out of the tire, but do not really like the look or condition that the tire is in. Looking for a new tire right now.

    Default tires

the cracks are on both sides of my front but mainly on left. i am taking my bike in for new 240 e3 on rear at 10000 miles tomorrow. found steel belts showing on center of tire for about 10 inches. rolling burnouts are not good for tire life, haha.

OK - I've had the Avon Cobras on (front and back - 240) for about 1,000k now. I put 28,000 on OEM sized Metz's. The Avons make the bike feel less stable, and have a slight tendency to drop in the turns. I found that I got used to the difference very quickly, and absolutely LOVE the way the bike handles now. My "chicken strips" are about a half inch wide. I find that it is as if the bike lost 100 pounds. Lighter, more manoeuverable, leans better, much more fun in the turns. I DO notice that the acceleration is down a bit. As soon as I finish my ZX 14 customizing I will install my Barons Stealth and that should take care of that LOL ! 240 is muchly much better than 210.

For those people experiencing cracks in their tires, are there a lot of electric motors running in the place you store your bikes? Air compressors, etc. I've hear these produce ozone and ozone isn't good for rubber.

    Default Early tire break-down

Quite a while back I read an article that stated extended or long term storage in a place with cement floors is not that easy on rubber tires. When putting my bike and trailer away for winter I always make sure the tires have a piece of plywood between them and the cement floor of the garage. If this fact is true or not I don't know but... I've not had any issues with my tires so will continue the practice.
    cheers

I have a Avon 240 coming . my rear tire at just shy of 3000 miles is worn out. Not just center but all they way across . In fact coming home other day bike was getting squirrelly in the curves . I don't set around doing burn outs. I ride nearly every day to town 15 miles each way on 2 lane twisty road. I am hoping the AVON last longer.
I understood the worn out tires when I rode a Busa and was running it hard and lots of high speed . But not on this bike.

3000 miles...that's it??? Damn, I had 6500 to 7000 when I swapped out my Metz for the Avon and the original didn't even look critical. I was just ready for the switch.

As per the plywood, I hadn't heard about doing that but it sounds like a good idea to me. Guess I'll try it next winter. I do have a heater in my garage so I hope that helps some.
