Default Gilroys Brewery - A destination for a Star Trek

Anita and me shared some time with Nadia and her friend at Gilroys Brewery, just off the Beyers Naude off-ramp from the N14.

    What a great venue.

Very good beer and food, with a great vibe.

I suggest we could do a reverse route from Centurion Yamaha via Hartebeespoort to Gilroys where a very good time could be shared.

Maybe replace the Red Star route with this?

The first picture shows a part of the venue about half an hour before it became very busy.

The second? Well, that is some happy people sharing very good beer.

Yes...a great place, good beer, live musioc and a very festive crowd. Sand road a 'little' problem for Cylinderella after a few beers. I would definitely go again though.

    Now you're talking.

As a member of The Worthogs Brewers ass. (yes wort as for beer not wart as in wild pig) I get weekly updates on beer festivals for home and micro brewers and many of these venues / events are quite interessting. I have not proposed it yet as this activity does not go well with biking. There are just too many interesting brews to taste.

It was excactly this and a related activity (Klaas also owns a proper Liebieg Condenser) that saw me miss out on the Feb Star ride. Full story will take some convincing to tell.

Zeus - we had the Red Star event so we cannot replace that - it will have to be another. Guess who missed Red Star.

    Zeus

    Seems like a great venue.

Most important: the friends and the ride. Next time, bring Anita too.

    Hi Zeus

Seems to be good from the pictures you sent. Your judgement is always good. As our calendar is already set, let's look to make an unofficial ride to the venue. I will send out such a message.

    Default Kilroy was there

I went on Sunday - and remembered we were there years ago to show some foreign guests the glass blowing at the factory, that is part of the same premises.

There was a 17 piece brass band performing - with a good repertoire - some contemporary stuff and some old big band swing. The atmosphere/ ambiance was good. I believe there is live music every Sun. but we will have to book, whenever we go.

Gilroy himself and his lieutenant, who looks like a walrus, also provided good entertainment - including a version of the All Black hak-ka, complete with translation - was funny.

The alternative, which I am also going to explore is 11h00 Sat morning (also on appointment) - a tour, comedy lecture and beer tasting presented by Mr Gilroy. Price R 80,00

    In general;
    • Not much for vegetarians to eat. In general not a spectacular menu. I had pickled fish: was nothing more than the tinned item on lettuce and tomato - R 58, Sven had a Burito - R 68.
    • Beers are R 23/ R24 per 500 ml draught. All Gilroy's. Mostly drinkable.
    • As metioned by Cylinderrella - short, but good condition dirt road from the entrance.
I have a rare opportunity this Sat to do the beer tasting - School holidays so no rugby. Who else wants to make it? we have to book.
