I personally think you should have a choice. I wear a helment most of the time. If it hadn't been for a helment I wouldn't be here today. I had a Ford expedition pull out in front of me and I was only a few yards away from him, just enough time to pull the brake handle twice. I broke my back both wrist, tibia and fibia in left leg, broken and dislocated right hip and crushed right foot. A broken nose to boot. I landed 28 ft the other side of the car. My helment had two huge scrapes and cuts in it. I was life flighted to Atlanta Ga. where I spent four weeks in ICU. In a coma for two weeks. 8 surgerys later I went home. Had it not been for the helment I'd been dead on the spot, so I wear a helment 8)

I don't believe there should be a helmet law, I believe you should decide that for yourself. But for me I always wear a helmet. And I wear a full face helmet. It is my choice.

Bro's for me choice is "freedom". I personally have had my happy arsh saved more times than I care to remember by my helmets and I continue to wear one by choice. Good thing cause the Army "dictates" that I wear one regardless (just a part of my benefits  ). What would decrease motorcycle deaths in my humble opinion is MANDATORY motorcycle training (gotta learn to ride, read respect) and awareness for ALL drivers.

Eagle hit the nail on the head, it's about freedom!!! I don't know how we as Americans can keep watching the freedoms that so many have sacrificed so much for get systematically stripped away.
We have sat back and let our rights be taken away. There are too many examples to list, gun rights (yes, I said rights), property rights......
It's always the same systematic method. Start with a small, seemingless harmless law that most will not mind, then expand that out till we've given up our personal freedoms.
Think about it, first it was only fully automatic weapons. Nobody has a need for them, and that was hard to argue against. Then it's "assault" weapons, the length of the barrel, the number of rounds it holds,.....until we're now fighting just to be able to leagally own guns at all.
The seat belt laws are another one. At first it would not be a reason to make a traffic stop, and it wouldn't be a moving violation, that's been taken down the same path.
The first smoking law was simple. No smoking on flights with short durations. Now look at it.
We need to get back to personal responsiblity. I should be held responsible for my actions. Period, end of story. If I want to ride without a helmet, it's my head. I don't need, or want, big brother or anyone else deciding what's best for me.

I always wear a helmet, always have. Just seemed like common sense. Same with a seatbelt. That is my choice and although I don't agree with those who choose otherwise, it's their head not mine. That being said I too believe that a helmet law is not necessary as long as one is insured enough to cover their injuries. As long as my tax dollars aren't keeping you on life support than I have no problem with your choice.
If you'll notice, I have never used the word "rights" and that's because operating a motor vehicle is not a right, it is a priveledge. We have no rights as motorists except what the law allows us. Guns are granted to us by the constitution so therefore it is a right. Helmet/seatbelt laws are not about restricting personal freedoms or our "right" to choose. Driving down roads owned by a municipality (City, State or Federal owned) is governed by the laws the legislators deem necessary for their roads. If you don't like the laws, don't drive on the roads. No one is forcing you.
My 2 cents.

VReater,
You are correct, driving is a priveledge, not a right. I stand corrected.
However, when I got pulled over because a police officer couldn't see if I was wearing a seatbelt, and proceeded to hold me and my passengers there for 45 minutes while he ran me for warrents and tried to intimidate me into letting him searh my vehicle, that's infringing on my freedom.
The real point I was attempting to make, and apparently failed, is this countries government is republic. As in representing the people of the country. If we, the people who are being represented don't pay attention, the ones supposedly representing us will take the freedom and rights we have left.
What happens when these legislators decide for all of us that helmets or not, motorcycles are just unsafe. Remeber 3 wheelers, before everything was a quad?
By the way, what makes a City, State, or other municipality? People. People pay the taxes that fund the roads, and pay the saleries of the legislators that are supposed to represent these poeple, not pass laws they "deem necessary".
Don't hear what I'm not saying, I don't put all the blame on the government reps, we are just as much to blame when we don't pay attention and get involved.
So, I'll drive on the roads even if I don't like the laws, thank you. I'll also keep pushing in every way I can to protect everyones freedoms and rights, because with all due respect, these laws are all about "restricting personal freedoms".
My 67 cents

Oblongs,
Absolutely agree. Couldn't have said it better. Time for us all to wake up or the Secular Progressives, Social Liberals or whatever you want to call them will destroy everything that made this country great in the first place.
Sorry if I came off like I was pointing at you, not my intention! Ride Safe.

LET THOSE THAT RIDE DECIDE
This is the slogan of UBM (United Bikers of Maine) and I agree 110%. I don't need anymore "keep me safe from myself" laws ... tired of politicians treating the people like we are too ignorant to live without being told how to live by them.
This stuff really gets me going ... http://v-man.org/images/gif/angry1.gif

About the only law I agree with as far as the Government looking out for our saftey are the child car saftey seats . When my kids were small there wasn't even a seatbelt law . I'd have to drive around with my left hand so I could have my right ready to grab the kids in case of a fast stop or whatever . How stupid we were . Most of us are just lucky our kids weren't seriously injured because of our own stupidity . God bless the person who invented those car seats for kids .

I really believe they are slowly trying nfiltrating our country preparing for no good for sure . Not that we'd want or or ever could but what do you think Iran would think if all of the sudden Americans began to buy every corner store , apartment house and drive every cab in their country .

I sure like the way you put the 'my tax dollars' because you are right.
