View Full Version : Another integrated tail option ... Custom LED

I read on another Raider forum a couple of weeks back that a company by the name of Custom LED was looking for a Raider taillight to prototype. I volunteered and sent them mine. Come to find out, the Warrior circuit board is the same as the Raider's, so they already had a product that works. The main thing that caught my eye with their product was the use of yellow LEDs for the turn signals. They also utilize a feature that "strobes" your brake light when you first apply the brakes. The stock tail has 16 LEDs. They use 32 red LEDs and 32 yellow LEDs in their tail. And they are BRIGHT. I just installed it today and can tell you it is brighter and more attention grabbing than the stock setup by far.
I tried to capture it on video, but my digicam is showing it's age and does not do the product justice.
Anywho, here is the makeshift video that I made. Again, it does no justice to the brightness of this light. Also, the brake/tail LEDs are RED. The signal LEDs are YELLOW. The video colors are all mucked up.

Did you do the install or was yours done during R&D? It looks like it is a bit involved, cutting the stock tailight apart and smashing lenses with a metal object. I read the instructions and was wondering if it was as bad as it sounded in the instructions.

No, I didn't have to do the circuit board install on mine, but I did read the instructions they have posted on their site. Sounds worse than it is, I'm sure. I've done similar mods with pickup headlights before where you put them in an oven for awhile to soften the glue and whatnot. I'm sure with a little patience it can be done pretty easily.
looks really good, not a bad price either

Checked out tail light and like it. I will be ordering mine soon and instructions seem detailed and should be easy to do with some time.

I like this version a lot better. But I would be nervous about tearing up the stock light. you screw it up and no telling how long it would take to get a new one from Yammi.

If you're nervous about hacking into your bike's taillight, I bought a spare from the local Yamaha dealer to use while Custom LED had mine. $65 and I had it in less than a week. Now I gotta see if they'll take it back! :icon10:

I installed a integrated tail light on my 05 R1 from these guys and the install is very simple. I did most of my work with a dremel. It took me a hour to get it open, install the new circuit board, and then install it back on my bike.

My dealership installed the Warrior intagrated tail light... finished it off beautifully and installed a side (chrome) mounded license plate holder (attached @ the chain guard w/light) before I drove it home.
They did a first class job.... ;D

:D I just completed the install on the LED integrated tail light and turn signals. The install is pretty simple over all. The directions explain step by step what to do. The only part that was a little nerve racking is cutting into the lens cover. Once you get through that, its smooth sailing. When glueing the cover back together, don't use a fast setting apoxy. It can get a bit messy, so take your time. I'm sure it took me longer that it will take some. I covered all wires with a shrink wrap and also installed the side mount plate bracket.
I recommend doing the install if you have the tools, time and a little patience. The brake light looks great, and no big bulky turn signals sticking out. Two thumbs up............ :coolsmiley:
thats good to hear i think ill be going that route eventually ;D

I'm stalling the Custom LED, interated tail light, but i'm not sure where to start cutting. the instructions are not clear. Do you have any info? thanks.

Look at the lens cover. You have the clear cover and the black back plate. Where the two meet, you will see a strip of black glue holding the two parts together. Carefully cut the clear lens right next to the strip of glue. The directions said to only cut part way through and insert a screw diver to brake the parts apart. I didn't want to crack the lens and not be able to re-assemble it, so I carefully cut all the way through the lens.
Before you try to glue it back together, use a small sanding wheel to clean up and rough edges. Match the two parts up, to find areas that don't match up. Keep sanding a little at a time and test fitting until you get a good match.
Hope this helps
Brian

Thanks Brian for the info! I was able to get it done last night. The instructions out there and the ones given by the company can use more details. The wording didn't help clarify the picture, it was the opposite. I had 3 of my friends read them and we were still not sure where to cut. I didn't want to cut in the wrong place :rant-rave:

ANYone notice which is brighter?? using the factory one....or buying the CustomLED one?

you can also stick the tail light in a 200 degree oven for about 15 minutes and the glue will melt enough that you can pull it apart without any cutting. This is how I took the headlights apart on my corvette to have the insides painted to match the car.

The CustomLED board is a lot brighter than OEM.

The guys at Performance Edge want you to take the stock light off and send it to them with up to a two week turnaround.
Who wants to leave thier bike sitting for two weeks after a long winter waiting for a tail light to show up?
I think that they need to come up with a better option.

If you contact them odds are that they already have a tailight modded on the shelf so it would just be shipping time. This is what they offered me when I inquired.

LADMarines,
That is the same one that I installed and FazT1 provided the info for:

If you plan to do this mod, download the directions for McCoys web site, or I can post them for you. They are easier to read than the ones you receive with the LED kit.

Well, my side plate is mounted and I'm stuck at the point where you have to cut the light housing. Man, this is painful for me. I've this thread over and over as well as the instructions and I'm just not exactly sure where to cut. Also, 15 min in the oven at 200 degrees produced nothing. The glue was just as hard.
I'm gonna break for the night and read the damn instructions and this thread again until I am comfortable with the cut. This blows bigtime as tomorrow is bike night at a local pub and I was sooooo ready to roll up in my raider. :baldy:
Ok, couldn't sleep cause of this damn thing...
I got up at 0530 and began cutting :rant-rave: . At 0815 the assembly was back together and all lights checked. :beer2:.
I'll cut the lower part off after work and after the lense has a few hours for the glue to seal.

Wow the oven didn't get it??? I have done several headlights that way, they must use some super duper glue on those things. Glad you got it done, enjoy your bike night!!
All done, looks great! Bike night was a freaking blast...favorite phrase of the night (from Harley owners) "Holy .... man!" exclaimed after getting a close look at the shiny head of the front cyclinder. I love this bike. :super:

How is everyone fixing the fast blink rate of the turn signals?
eian31
05-11-2008, 08:24 PM
I don't know about the integrated kits, for some reason I thought they had a load equlaizer already installed. If not you will nedd to get a load equalizer. They can be had on ebay fairly cheap.

I ended up using 2 8 Ohm 20Watt resistors from radioshack. $2.50 each.
Wire them in to the hot on each turn signal hot and them tied them into the same ground from the old turn signal wires.
Works great and blinks at a close to stock rate or right on? Can't tell a difference.

From the Custom LED website's FAQ page:
Q: I installed a Custom LED Integrated Tail and another manufacturers LED flushmounts and now my blinkers wont blink at all, what's wrong and how do I fix it?
A: If the amount of power consumed by the blinkers is too little, the stock flasher relay will fall below a threshold where it will no longer blink. To fix this problem, you must either replace the flasher relay with one that does not have a minimum load requirement and/or a bulb-out notification such as The Custom LED Electronic LED Flasher Relay. Or, if your bike does not have a replaceable flasher relay then you need to install the Custom LED Stage II Load Equalizer.

Install a load equalizing heavy duty flasher, you will loose the auto-off feature though......

Tried the resistors...no bueno...:(...Everything works except the left rear...leads me to believe it is a problem with the actual taillight....any ideas?

Had a similar problem, turns out that I pinched a wire. I had to go through and check all the wires to the rear of the bike to find it. Wouldn't ya know, it was the last one. Did a little repair, and all fixed up. I decided to say with the quicker blink rate, I like it..
