View Full Version : Back Off Light Flasher Anyone?

Anyone install a back off light flasher? Just got mine in today. I understand you can install it any where in the brake switch wire. Somewhere between the lever and rear light it self. Where did you install yours?
At first glance I was thinking to splice in right at the rear light under the plastic cover.
Is there any other/better/more accessible place to put it? Maybe under the seat?
Does the foot and lever switch tie into one wire for the rear light?
I am not sure how/where this wire is routed through the bike. Wish I had a wiring diagram right now.
Thanks

I use one and love it. You did get the XP model for LED lights. The XP is the only one that will work with our putt putt.

Thanks for the reply and the link. Where did you mount yours? Under the rear fender?

All you guys suck at this question so I had to figure it out myself :tour:
I traced the harness to under the seat.
I really like this simple mod. It really brings attention. Every person driving behind me is now going to get brake checked :thumbup2:. Nice to know that I can create some extra visibility when needed.
> Remove your seat and pull the bungee off to the computer (I think thats what it is) and set it aside.
> In the velcro wire pouch find the harness with the yellow, blue, brown wires. It's about the biggest connector under there.
> The wire for the brake switch is the solid yellow wire shown in the picture below.
> Cut this wire and hook up the Back Off module.
> I grounded it to the frame as also shown below.

Here it is all put together. :thumbup2: I used tie wraps instead of the double sided tape provided. It's more reliable and easier to take off if needed.

I have hesitated to post on this thread but I feel obligated to. I don't think tis is a good idea.
If I am following somebody and see their brake lights flash a few times I know they are slowing down. If I see the lights come on SOLID then I think it is a full stop and possibly a panic stop.
Could a flashing brake light actually send the wrong signal to a following vehicle? Could they take that extra second to decide it was a full/panic stop and maybe be a bit late in responding the correct way?
I understand the need to get their attention, but is this the right way to do it?
Just my opinion...we all have one.
Trader,
For what it is worth my opinion is that there cannot be too much red lights flashing or not. When I hit my brakes I want to let those behind me know that they had best be alert.... Prepare for anything....when I follow You can bet that if I see any change in the brake lights I am ready to initiate evasive procedures immediately. be it stop, slow down or swerve. Because I can not read minds I prepare for the worst.....Oh well....it has kept me alive for over 40 years of riding...

Curt, I respect what you say. I agree that the more light the better (within reason, of course). Visibility on these things is almost everything. The pipes, the lights, the reflectors. the protective gear all help. But it all depends upon that nut holidng the handle bars.
It is a given - More red on the back is better. The question is, should it flash or go solid red, regardless of how much there is. To me, there is no reason to automatically turn off the red and turn it back on, especially when I'm trying to say STOP.
I am sure this debate will rage for a long time, just like whether or not loud pipes save lives. There is a case to be made, and they are selling a lot of Back-offs. There are obviously those that disagree with me. I'm just offering a different perspective. I don't disrespect anyone riding with a Back-off, I just don't agree wth it. I'm sure there are other things we can agree on.

... Visibility on these things is almost everything.
With Drag Specialties Rear Running Lights/Signals (in RED of course), the visibility is greatly enhanced!

Yes, I drilled the fender.
I've repalced/relocated the front signals with Drag Specialties units also...

TRaider I agree the only time I would want my brake lights flashing is when I'm already stopped at a light and there is traffic coming up behind me then I'll tap them to help be seen.

I understand your point. I read on another post someone said they were following some one with a flashing brake light and it just confused them. I read it as at least the guy following was paying attention to the bike in front of them.
On the module I there are two options. One option where the lights flash, go solid, flash then go solid. The other option is the lights flash 5 times and then go solid and stay solid until you release and hit the brake again. I use the second option. By the time I come to a complete stop the brake light is solid.
I have had this module on my bike for a good while now and the response is great. I have noticed lots of cars do "back off" when I hit the brakes. Either they know I have some kind of module and respect that I am safety conscious or they think I am brake checking them. I am also more confident a lights now at night. If I see someone pulling up behind me I simply release the brake once and re engage to give a little warning that I am there. Again I have noticed people actually give a little distance.
I would have to say the benefits out weight any concerns.
Now, if I could just find some way to keep cars from running into other cars because the drivers are busy rubber necking at my ridiculously loud, bright a$$ bike....:roflblack:

I put the clear altenative sequential tail light made for the Warrior on my wife's bike and it has a built in brake flasher that last for 3 seconds. I feel this warns people when she is stopping or slowing down. This light has 100 leds and is significant lighting for the rear by it's self, more light more power.
My Opinion

Nice Putt Putt... Where did you get the chrome piece that fills the access hole on the boomerang right below the rear foot peg? I have been looking for some but haven't been able to do so... thanks

I took it off my 86 vf700 magna fit perfect. You may go to Home depot or Lowes and look at the chrome sink strainers to see if they will work for you.
